Role

Lead UX Research, Strategy, and Design for Simulation Software Modernization

Team Composition:

1 UX Manager, 1 UX Designer, 1 UX Developer, 1 Scrum Master
Our team worked in support of several engineering teams and the product management team. I would frequently collaborate with the leads from those teams.

Project type:

Feature Enhancement

Overview:

As part of our process we worked with our development teams to figure out where innovation would meet feasibility. Our team wanted to keep the wireframes low-fidelity to focus our discussions on interactions and avoid being derailed by the look and feel.

The Challenge:

The culture of CD-Adapco, the legacy company that created Star CCM+ was engineering-centric, but that came with both a preference to focus on functionality and constraints on user access and a reluctance to adopt modern UX best practices. These designs were part of our process to create buy-in from the engineering teams.

My Role:

This project didn't just challenge me with presenting innovations, but it also forced me to cultivate techniques to facilitate stakeholder buy-in and generate cultural shifts.

Outcomes:

• These designs were part of a process that won our stakeholders over.

• Engineering teams adopted several of these presented methods and incorporated some of these innovations into our current offerings.

• Our team broke cultural constraints and these concepts showed our stakeholders enough to grant us access to customers. This alone changed a self-imposed decades old constraint on user-research for anybody outside of product management.

In support of development of our next-generation offering we explored the concept of incorporating a tabular editor that could be used in our current UI as well as any future solutions.
